All about inefficient household appliances
One thing remains certain, the power crisis is not going to diminish or disappear. With our world’s growth in green power efficiency, many of yesteryears appliances are becoming quickly obsolete. As people, we do need to look to our future and realize that a sound investment today will ensure the health of both our pockets and environment in the future. Though many energy-efficient appliances are popping up, a lot of people still own ones which are anything but. In no particular order, here are 10 of the most inefficient appliances you can possibly own.1: Refrigerators. These are some of the most inefficient appliances to ever be invented. Sure, they keep your food cold and make pretty little ice cubes, but they eat away at your electricity bill like no other appliance in your house. You can make a switch to a more energy-efficient fridge, but that still may not do the trick. A good tip to remember is to not buy a bigger fridge than you need.
Electric Dryers. Clothes dryers are the number 2 largest consumer of household energy among appliances. Surprising to most people, gas dryers are available and around 80% cheaper to run. Switching to gas is something that may well be worth it, especially if you have a large family which has to dry a lot of clothes.
Washing Machines. The waste here is washing too many loads in hot water. Hot water forces your water heater to kick into action, wasting electricity. And another big waste is if you’re washing a few items or a whole load, most people leave their washing cycle set to maximum capacity. This too is a drain on electricity. If you can remember to always wash your clothes with cold water and let the size of the load dictate the amount of water used, you can start to make your appliance more efficient.
Dishwashers. This item is set to be the ultimate in convenience. There’s just one problem, 90% of all models are anything but efficient. The best way to save energy here is just to buy an energy-efficient model, or just wash dishes with your hands in the sink.
Water Heaters. These items are far from efficient. Buying a gas heater is probably your best option if you wish to lead a more energy-efficient lifestyle.
Ovens. Electric ovens/stovetops can cost a small fortune to run. The amount of energy used to power a single burner could set you back hundreds each year. Buying a gas range could eliminate this.
Microwaves. Sure, they’re convenient if you’re cooking on the go. But microwaves eat up electricity and have been known to throw your circuit breakers incessantly.
Vacuum Cleaners. Running a vacuum cleaner when it’s unnecessary makes this item very inefficient.
Air Conditioners. Those old box-shaped air conditioners cost a fortune to operate. They’re some of the most energy inefficient items on the market. Make a sound investment and switch to central air. Or better yet, use a box fan and open a window.
Hair Dryers and Curling Irons. Women love these products but little do most know that they’re using massive amounts of electricity to do their hair. Try using a towel and a set of manual curlers.
